Our emergency Departments

Our emergency medicine network includes 8 hospital emergency departments and 4 urgent care centers, and oversees over 350,000 ED patient visits annually. The clinical sites are staffed by over 200 board-certified, attending physicians, many of whom are on faculty at Harvard Medical School.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC)

The BIDMC Emergency Department, the hub of our operations, is a level 1 trauma center serving the Boston metropolitan area. BIDMC is a 673-bed acute care hospital and the emergency department treats over 55,000 patients a year. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to meet the needs of a high-volume, acutely injured or ill patient population.

The ED is staffed by over 50 specialty trained, board-certified physicians with expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide spectrum of acutely injured or ill patients. An on-site, integrated radiology suite and round-the-clock laboratory services are available to assist with every emergency need. Staff members are also involved in research, toxicology, public policy, disaster planning, residency training, prehospital care and international emergency medicine. Medical coverage in the ED is provided by 'layered attending physician staffing' with as many as 3 attending physicians on at one time.

A teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, BIDMC's Emergency Department is home to the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency (HAEMR), a highly competitive three-year residency program with a total of 39 residents, selected from over 1,000 annual applications. In addition, the emergency department is engaged in clinical, translational, and basic science research. Our "bench-to-bedside" research philosophy has improved the care and treatments we offer to our patients, and enhances our programs to educate future healthcare providers.

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital—Needham

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham is a 53-bed community hospital located 19 miles southwest of Boston. The recently renovated ED treats 19,000 patients per year and is recognized for its life saving stroke care, advanced medical technology, and its direct link to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

The recently renovated Emergency has 19 private treatment rooms, a separate pediatric waiting room and a double ambulance bay with direct access to a fully equipped trauma room. The admission rate from the ED is 23%.

The Department also offers: 

  • Telemedicine for acute stroke consultations

  • Radiology services

  • Rapid transport to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for patients requiring cardiac catheterization or other advanced care.

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital—Milton

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton is an 81-bed community hospital just south of Boston. The ED serves more than 30,000 patients per year and is staffed and managed by our team of Harvard faculty, attending physicians from BIDMC who are experts in treating critically ill patients and managing trauma.  The clinical team is highly trained in various specialties to handle a broad range of adult and pediatric emergency care.

The Emergency Department at BID–Milton offers a Fast Track service staffed with a physician assistant to facilitate and expedite the care of patients with lower acuity complaints. The ED has double MD coverage noon to 9:00 PM and AHP provider coverage from 8:00 AM to midnight. The admission rate from the ED is 21%.

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital—Plymouth

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth is a 170-bed acute-care hospital serving more than 250,000 residents in the Plymouth and Barnstable counties of Massachusetts, and is the region’s leading provider of high-quality health care.

The Emergency Department treats nearly 45,000 patients each year. The specialty-trained, board-certified physicians and emergency nursing staff have expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide spectrum of injured and ill patients. BID–Plymouth ED nurses are Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) providers and many have advanced training in pediatrics and trauma in addition to Certified Emergency Nursing specialty certification. BID–Plymouth offers state-of-the-art therapies for treating acute coronary conditions and stroke. These leading-edge therapies offer patients new hope for promising outcomes, and improved long-term prognoses. The ED has 52 licensed treatment spaces including a 7 bed separate behavioral health area.

The ED also has access to BIDMC TeleNet Stroke service and 24/7 on call Interventional Cardiologists to treat heart attacks in the hospital’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab. Emergency Physician coverage in the ED is provided by layered attending physician staffing with as many as three attending physicians on at one time during peak patient presentation hours. The admission rate from the ED is 32%.

St. Luke’s Hospital

St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford is a leading health care provider in Southeastern Massachusetts, continually growing in scope and technologies to meet the diverse needs of the families of Greater New Bedford.

The emergency department is one of the busiest in Massachusetts with an annual volume of over 90,000 ED visits. With over 55 beds, the Department includes 2 state-of-the-art trauma rooms, 9 negative-pressure decontamination rooms for the treatment of patients with contagious diseases or hazardous exposures, a 6-bed dedicated pediatric emergency area, a safe and secure behavioral health unit with state-of-the-art equipment and monitoring, and a 16-bed rapid assessment area for highly efficient express care and lower acuity needs. The department has double MD coverage 24 hours a day. The admission rate from the ED is 27%.

Harrington Hospital

Harrington Healthcare's Southbridge Emergency Department offers 24-hour care for emergency medical and psychiatric conditions and is a designated Primary Stroke Service Center. The facility currently includes 8,500 square feet of space with renovations completed in 2021 resulting in an additional 2,400 square feet of space including three new exam rooms, a second dedicated emergency CT scanner, and a modernized facility to care for over 35,000 patients each year.

Harrington Healthcare at Webster

The Remillard Family Emergency Department, at Harrington Healthcare’s Webster campus, offers 24-hour care for emergency medical and psychiatric conditions. This stand-alone emergency department is staffed by emergency physicians 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. The facility features 13,000 square feet of emergency treatment space, including a central registration area, two waiting rooms, nine private exam rooms, a dedicated psychiatric pod, and a separate ambulance entrance. The Webster ED sees 13,000 patients per year.
